The village is one of the larger ones in Lincolnshire, located in North Kesteven, midway between Sleaford and Swineshead Bridge south of the A17 road.
The village has a 900-year tradition of holding festive weekends, and the Heckington Show, held annually in the village during the last weekend in July since 1864, traces its origins back to the week connected with the Feast of St Mary.
The Heckington Show has grown to become the largest village show in England, and has been on the current site in the north east of the village since 1867. The family of William Little continues to host the event each year.
Packed with plenty of things to do, free activities to occupy the children, spectacular main ring events, trade stands, traditional fairground, animals, marquees, live music, and so much more, it’s no surprise that it attracts over 20,000 visitors each year.
The centre-piece each year is the Concert Marquee with its full 2 day programme and the Horticultural Marquee where everything related to green fingers and growing takes place. There are Field Trade Stands of every description, showing off Lincolnshire farming at its best.
The Bygones, Heritage, Vintage Machinery and Model Exhibits continue to be very popular with all visitors, young and old. There’s also a wide choice of fine, locally produced food and refreshment stalls. The Tug-o-War and Ploughing exhibitions and competitions are also a firm favourite.
Visitors to the Heckington Show are always encouraged to take part in the activities at the show. There are always many competitions or interactive events to enter including art, athletics and cooking to name but a few. And the younger family members are always at the forefront with children’s races – and to add to the overall excitement, the odd one or two celebrities have also been known to throw in their lot and compete with the visitors.
And on the Saturday evening, there is a spectacular Grand Firework Concert.
